First Steps

Once she’s missed a period, everything can change – fast. What happens next may be her decision, but most women really care where their guy is coming from.

Here are a few steps to making the best choice for both of you – together.

  1. Confirm the pregnancy at Hope Clinic for Women.
  2. Offer to go with your partner to the Ultrasound appointment.
  3. Listen to her thoughts & feelings. What excites her? What does she fear?
  4. Share your thoughts & feelings. If you aren’t sure how to start, say something like “when you told me you might be pregnant, I felt ____, because ____. Now that I’ve had time to think about it, I hear what you are saying. , I feel ____, because ____.” Also, consider talking with others who are close to you.
  5. Let her know how important she is to you.  Don’t pressure her about the pregnancy or ignore the situation.  Instead, commit to exploring your options together and getting whatever help you need to make your relationship better than ever.

"What makes you a man is not the ability to have a child - it's the courage to raise one."

President Barack Obama, from his 2008 Father's Day speech

How does the HCW Fatherhood Program work?

We'll pair you with a male coach to advise, encourage, challenge, and equip you to be a loving father and partner, to build a stable family home environment.

We also provide evidence-based videos and resources on topics such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • Respecting your partner
  • The kind of father you’d like to be
  • How to be a role model to your child
  • Financial management
  • Consistency / stability
  • Getting connected to a community.

The program is designed to meet bi-monthly at the Clinic with your male coach.  Periodic group classes sessions are scheduled for deeper dives into selected Fatherhood materials and a monthly ‘Pizza & Wings’ Guy’s Night Out brings Dads and Coaches together for food, fun and fellowship.

All participation earns “points” towards $50 Cash Cards.
